One Small Thing January 2022 Update

Safe Homes for Women Leaving Prison Declaration

One Small Thing alongside many in the sector have signed a declaration today to call on the Government to take urgent action to stop thousands of vulnerable women each year being set up to fail as they are released from prison without access to safe and secure accommodation. A recent report from the Independent Monitoring Board shows that in July 2021, 77% of women from the UK’s largest women’s prison faced homelessness on release. Read more here.

Update on Hope Street

Building has continued at pace this year for our residential community for women in Hampshire, Hope Street, with the timber frame of the residential building complete, and the Hub building beginning to go up! The refurbishment work on our first move on house is progressing well, and the interior fit out will begin next month. We were delighted to appoint Southampton University as our evaluation partner for Hope Street last year and work has already begun meeting with local stakeholders to inform this exciting five year longitudinal study. We continue to build local partnerships and now have our own temporary office space which also supports the work we are doing via the Hampshire probation with Advance. Over the last five months we have worked alongside 30 women to support them with their housing and other support needs.

Trauma Informed Network

We have five new free network meetings coming up across the country. This includes the rescheduled East Midlands meeting which is now on 09 March focused on Reflective Practice. At the East Midlands network we plan to explore the key components of reflective practice and how to make it work for you. You will also have a chance to make connections with colleagues and share good practice.

Find out about themes for the other regional networks dates in February and March here.

Previous network participant:
‘This meeting gave me the time and space to think about trauma-informed approaches and hear other people’s thoughts. It was really helpful!’ October 2021
