2021: A Year in Review

After what has been another challenging year for most, we are sure many of you are looking forward to some time to rest and reflect over the festive period. As we approach the new year, we have been reflecting on the 2021 at One Small Thing.

We are very proud to share that despite the disruption caused by the pandemic this year, our team have continued to step up and achieve an incredible amount.

This year we have:

Began in earnest the build for Hope Street, our residential community for women and their children in Hampshire. The site was cleared, secured and work on the foundations and structure began alongside renovations of our first move on home.

Established the Hope Street team and began frontline delivery with women as part of the Hampshire Probation contract with Advance. We have also appointed University of Southampton as our Evaluation partner to begin a five-year longitudinal evaluation after a competitive process.

Continued to support staff and residents in prison through regular virtual meetings and providing practical resources to support trauma informed working; these include a pocket guide to trauma for staff, and self-soothing guided exercises on CDs and DVDs for residents.

Championed trauma informed and gender responsive work through our open access and in-house Becoming Trauma Informed Training in prisons and the community, reaching over 500 professionals.

Delivered at least one Trauma Informed Network meeting across every English region and Wales, allowing professionals to share insights and ideas.

Supported thirteen organisations to start their Working with Trauma Quality Mark and so far have awarded the Quality Mark to three organisations.

Hosted an even bigger online OST Live conference attended by 220 people from the UK and overseas to discuss the core values of trauma informed practice.

Published bi-monthly JUSTICE podcasts reaching 16,919 people providing a platform to explore issues related to the justice system and influence for change.

Worked to refine our vision and mission and increased our policy, research and communications work, including joint polling with Crest on maternal imprisonment, and publishing our first impact report.

Worked with amazing colleagues and partners over the year. We want to thank you for all your support throughout 2021.
